I realized that with all that has been going on I never posted this painting finished. This one is 8x10 and still the most recently finished "carousel horse." It was in Art Grows Rexburg in July 2017, close to the time I finished it. The flowers in real life are a bit less saturated.

I wanted to it be girly and I think that went along with working on it during my daughters first year, and seeing how she did things differently from her brother even when she was so little. I know society likes to focus on how men and women can do the same things, but I think we miss something if we don't also recognize some of the inherent differences related to gender.Amy S. The world talks about a lot of things being androgynous right now, but I find beauty in something being feminine or masculine. The goal of this horse is to be feminine. I hope it communicates this when it is finished.
It is only 8x10 in but has a similar feel to the Fall Festive horse, just smaller. Also, this horse eventually will be bay, but they are both Arabians and have a similar head position. This is the first horse I have painted with its nostrils this flared. I am excited to see how this one goes.
These carousel horses are based on the Rexburg winter. The full painting is 4x2 feet. This section is 2 feet tall. I hope it reaches the vision I have for the finished painting. It is fun to paint the horses this large after so many smaller paintings.
My husband likes this one a lot right now because it looks very realistic. I told him not to get used to it because it is going to be line style once some of these parts dry. I do like that it shows I still can paint realistically when I want though. This one is 6x8 inches with oil paint.
It is 6x8 like the last one but this one does not have the complex tack so I think it will come along faster. I plan to make it line style eventually but today I just wanted to start painting a good foundation before I had all those wet lines to mess up in the process. I also am priming a panel for a big painting today, but it is not much to look at right now.
Today was all details on the tack and some blue in the shadows. I also made some slight changes to the mane. This 8x6 inch oil painting is getting close to being done; though it may still take a few days to finish.
Here is an update on the 6x8 inch water grass horse. This oil painting is getting closer. A lot of what I did today was blue but it is pretty subtle. The lines are also getting some work. I also got a new art light after my last one broke; hence the "new light" in the title. It is much brighter than the one I had before and really makes painting enjoyable late at night.

I am very happy with how it turned out; it is a lot better than I thought it could be when I started. Part of the thought behind this painting and the other carousel styled horses that are coming is that of being bridled, a scriptural reference to self mastery. Normally I saw the bridle as restrictive from the horses perspective and intentionally took all the tack out of my designs. While working on this painting I considered the bridle as something beautiful and submissively or reverently worn. This painting is 12x12 inches in oil paint on a wood panel. This is the painting as I finished it tonight.
I realize now I would have enjoyed painting this one a little bigger. I did however get a new tiny paintbrush so I am starting to be able to paint the details that I want. I am in the process of the defining and adjusting the color of all the tack. I am calling this one the "water grass horse" because the tack was inspired by the canal grasses on my walks and the background in this one gives an impression there could be some water back there as well.
